How to Change the Gigs Terminology

Sometimes you may want to change the “gigs” terminology and use something like events, concerts, shows or performances instead.

For the most part, we try to refrain from using “gigs” on the front-end of the site, preferring “shows” or “events” over insider terminology. So updating the front-end is usually as easy as going to Gigs → Archive and changing the title and slug of the archive.

In some cases, certain text may be hardcoded in the theme and require a different method, but that’s the exception rather than the norm.

For the admin panel, your best bet is to create a custom translation.

Choosing a Translation App

There are many apps that will help translate WordPress themes and plugins, including Poedit and the Loco web app. Briefly, the typical process goes like this:

  1. Open the plugin’s POT file in a translation app
  2. Translate text (or strings) you want to change
  3. Save the translation as a PO and MO file

The Say what? provides a simple alternative if you only want to change a few strings.

However, for the sake of simplicity, we’ll use the Loco Translate plugin.

Updating Strings with Loco Translate

Loco Translate is a WordPress plugin that provides the ability to translate themes and plugins from within your WordPress admin panel. Be sure to read the plugin’s documentation if you have any questions, but here’s a quick guide:

  1. Install and activate Loco Translate
  2. Go to Loco Translate → Manage Translations in your admin panel
  3. Find AudioTheme in the plugins list and click the New Language link in the Translations column
  4. Select a language to translate to (choosing English (USA) will allow you to override the default strings)
  5. Add a new translation for each string you want to change
  6. Click the Save button when you’re done
  7. Refresh the screen to see your translations

If you’re not translating to a different language, it’s not necessary to translate every string — just update the ones you want to change
