This month we’re shining the spotlight on Lucy Wise, a singer/songwriter from Melbourne, Australia. Her blend of folk, chamber and pop music, combined with storytelling, gives Lucy’s music a unique, captivating, and genuine sound.
Lucy was kind enough to chat with us about her music, upcoming projects, and what she likes most about AudioTheme and her Nowell theme.
What’s your story? How did you get started?
My parents are both musicians and my dad is an instrument maker, so I’ve always been surrounded by stringed instruments growing up, and was given a ukulele when I was 4. Mum and dad used to get the family singing songs together after dinner each night when I was little, and eventually we started a family band. We started playing at Australian folk festivals when I was 11, we toured Australia all through my high school years, and when I was 17 we toured the US and Ireland.
Growing up performing with my family at folk festivals meant I got exposed to all sorts of different music from a really early age, and I started writing my own songs when I was 15. I moved to Melbourne (one of Australia’s music and arts ‘hubs’) in 2009, and started playing in bands, and performing solo gigs at bars around Melbourne, I recorded a debut EP, and my solo work springboarded from there!
How would you describe the music that you play?
It’s very influenced by all the folk music I’ve grown up with, as my songs tend to focus a lot on telling stories. I write about people and places in my life, and sometimes fictional characters enter into the stories. With my band I experiment with different ways in which the story can be told through our instruments. My current lineup (Lucy Wise Trio) features voice, ukulele, guitar, violin and double bass.
What’s your most popular/fan favorite song? Where can we hear it?
I don’t know! But one song I get lots of comments on when I perform (and one I’m proud of is “Little Bag”, which is on my first album, Lucy Wise & the B’Gollies. You can hear it here.
Is there anything new or exciting that we can look forward to from you?
I’ve just released a new EP with my trio I’m really excited about, it’s called “A Painting of the Universe” and is inspired by poems written by young Australian writers, aged 8 – 17. You can check it out here. I’m also planning on doing some touring in the US and UK in 2016!
What’s your favorite thing about your AudioTheme website or the AudioTheme plugin?
I love the clean lines and simple design, I think it allows your photos to create a big impression of what you do. The albums section of the website is fantastic, it’s easy to edit and easy for visitors to use.
