To understand how they work, let&#8217;s look at a black and white image of a giraffe from <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/\">Unsplash<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9360\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/giraffe-before.jpg\" alt=\"giraffe-before\" width=\"960\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/giraffe-before.jpg 960w, https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/giraffe-before-840x700.jpg 840w, https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/giraffe-before-300x250.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the image above, black is considered one endpoint and white is another endpoint &#8212; all the gray tones are gradations between the two. With gradient maps, you&#8217;re simply changing the color of the endpoints. It&#8217;s helpful to remember that black and white contrast, so choosing colors that contrast will usually produce a better duotone effect when selecting your endpoints.<\/p>\n<p>To apply a gradient map in Photoshop, click the adjustment layer icon ( <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9353\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/adjustment-layer-icon.jpg\" alt=\"adjustment-layer-icon\" width=\"25\" height=\"17\" \/> ) in your layer panel and select Gradient Map. The adjustment layer should be positioned above your image.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9354\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-01.jpg\" alt=\"Duotone Effect: Step 1\" width=\"1440\" height=\"873\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-01.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-01-840x509.jpg 840w, https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-01-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-01-1024x621.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Click the gradient in your Properties panel to bring up the Gradient Editor <em>(If your Properties panel doesn&#8217;t automatically open, double click the layer thumbnail on your adjustment layer or go to Window &gt; Properties)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9355\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-02.jpg\" alt=\"Duotone Effect: Step 2\" width=\"451\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-02.jpg 451w, https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-02-278x300.jpg 278w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 451px) 100vw, 451px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Select the lower left endpoint, then click the color swatch at the bottom to bring up the Color Picker.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9356\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-03.jpg\" alt=\"Duotone Effect: Step 3\" width=\"1017\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-03.jpg 1017w, https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-03-840x401.jpg 840w, https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-03-300x143.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1017px) 100vw, 1017px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This will let you choose a color to replace the shadows in your image. I&#8217;m using #003d7c for my example. After you choose your color, click OK and select the lower right endpoint on the right side of your Gradient Editor. Click the color swatch again to bring up the Color Picker.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9357\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-04.jpg\" alt=\"Duotone Effect: Step 4\" width=\"1017\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-04.jpg 1017w, https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-04-840x401.jpg 840w, https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-04-300x143.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1017px) 100vw, 1017px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This color will replace the highlights in your image. I&#8217;m using #35ff8d for my example. Click OK to set your color, then click OK in the Gradient Editor to set your gradient map.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9358\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-05.jpg\" alt=\"Duotone Effect: Step 5\" width=\"1440\" height=\"873\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-05.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-05-840x509.jpg 840w, https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-05-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/step-05-1024x621.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Because I replaced black with a blue color, all of the shadows use a blue tone, and because I replaced white with a seafoam green, all of the highlights use a green tone &#8212; including the image background, which started out solid white.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9359\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/giraffe-after.jpg\" alt=\"giraffe-after\" width=\"960\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/giraffe-after.jpg 960w, https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/giraffe-after-840x700.jpg 840w, https:\/\/staging.audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/giraffe-after-300x250.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s pretty much it.
